The fourteenth edition of the ‘Ruta de la Tapa’ (Tapas Route) started last Tuesday, 5th July. It is a traditional gastronomic walk through Mijas Pueblo which can be enjoyed on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August from 7.30 pm until 11 pm and where you can enjoy a tapa and a drink or ice cream for only three euros.

The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), participated in this inaugural event along with other Councillors from the government team. “We wanted to inaugurate a new ‘Ruta de la Tapa’ edition. In this case, the fourteenth walking Mijas Pueblo’s streets and enjoying the Mijas gastronomy, and supporting local commerce,” said the Mayor. He wanted to thank their participation “to all those restaurants and bars that have taken part”. This initiative revitalises the town, as many residents and tourists come to taste the different tapas on this route.

The start of the ‘Ruta de la Tapa’ has already left a good atmosphere in the Mijas Pueblo streets and the participating establishments, such as the Bellavista cafeteria and Muskoka Burger. The former is one of the traditional establishments on this route, as they have been participating since they opened. “We always try to make something tasty and easy to prepare since many people come here. We have to have something more practical”, said the owner of the cafeteria, Simone Olivera, who explained that her tapa, ‘Taco de pulled pork with pico de Gallo, is “homemade” and prepared by herself. In addition to the pulled pork, it has “ pico de Gallo and avocado”. The presentation is in a taco.

Muskoka Burger, however, is one of the new places to join this tour, as it opened recently. Its tapa is “a ‘Muskoka Croquette’, which is made from 100% beef burger and comes on a lettuce base with mustard, pickles and caramelised onion. It’s like an explosion,” said the manager of the establishment, Facundo Blanco, who said that people asked for a second helping.

There are newcomers to this route as Violeta Barrios and Juanjo Blond, a tourist couple from Madrid who already have the municipality as their fixed holiday destination. “We have been coming to Mijas for several years, and we think it’s beautiful! We wanted to come just the last holidays before our baby is born”, said Barrios after his partner explained that this was the first time they were going to do the ‘Ruta de la Tapa’. “This will also be our first tapa, and then we will go to the other bars to try the rest,” added Blond.

Others are veterans and do not miss any edition of the route, such as Cristina Lozano, who “every year” has done this gastronomic route and “completed” the tapas. For now, she has already tried two tapas, the one from Café Bar Porras and the one from Muskoka Burger.
