The first deputy mayor and councillor for Tourism in Mijas, José Carlos Martín (Cs), and the councillor for Sports, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), attended the regular assembly with the owners of the golf courses in the municipality on Thursday, 1st of December, where the Mijas Golf Courses Action Plan 2023 was put on the table, as well as the proposal to create a Mijas Golf Sectorial Committee and a sports school.

“These meetings are going to change their format as a result of the creation of the Mijas Golf Courses Association, because now our conversations will be with the president and we will attend the meetings that they specify, meaning that everything will be more streamlined for the general operations”, explained Martin, who announced that “during this last ‘traditional’ meeting we have reached consensus on the proposal to create a sectorial table that involves all areas of the Town Hall to give even greater impetus to the demands of the sector”.

The Local Council will also be present through the Infrastructure and Work Department, Operational Services, Local Police and Cleaning, among others. “In each meeting we are also going to involve professionals from the sector, as well as social agents who will surely offer useful contributions”, assured the first deputy mayor of Mijas, who stressed that “we are working hand in hand with the private sector in a synergy that allows us to promote one of the main tourist segments in our municipality”.

Golf Courses Action Plan

Martín also mentioned another of the important items that have been put on the table during the assembly, namely the Mijas Golf Courses Action Plan 2023, drawn up by the association. “As well as this road map that they have drawn up, we have the work provided by the Town Hall, so we will now join forces and resources to continue to place our city as an international reference for golf”, he said.

Municipal Golf School

Likewise, the third important proposal has to do with golf as a sport, as it is proposed for next year to set up the Municipal Golf School. “We want to launch a sports school with them in January or February, where anyone and everyone can come together and enjoy the sport. We want to strengthen the grassroots sport and show that this game is accessible to everyone. In addition, we plan to organise internal circuits with all the resident players who frequent the courses as well as international golfers, to continue consolidating the combination of tourism and sport”, said Ruiz, who emphasised “the promotion of golf among the residents of Mijas”.

Finally, Domingo Gavira, president of the association and managing director of El Chaparral golf course, commented that “the action plan goes beyond tourism promotion, as it promotes this sport in the Mijas area and aligns the private and public sectors to continue growing and promoting the town as an international golfing destination”.
