At the meeting, which coincided with the first year of war, author José Andrés Álvaro Ocáriz presented his book ‘La voz de la Ucrania libre’

Coinciding with the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine, the Association of Ukrainians Cultural Space of the Costa del Sol held a talk at the Restaurant Asador Rebernya in Mijas, where the presentation of the book ‘Táras Shevchénko: The voice of free Ukraine’ by Spanish writer José Andrés Álvaro Ocáriz, took place. During the event, poems were recited both in Ukrainian and Spanish.

In the quote the author himself contextualized the essence of his book with the current times and he does so with poetry: “...I only care about one thing, that in Ukraine evil people cunningly lull it, and plunder it wrapped in flames. Oh, I do care about that”. Álvaro Ocáriz explained that, “I looked at the figure of Táras Shevchénko, I came across it and it is very similar to that of our Zorrilla and Espronceda, and then I found that there were texts where Spaniards who went to the Soviet Union, children of the war, who went when the Civil War was fought here in Spain and then I found texts by them, so I have elaborated this book. I have removed the Soviet load, I have given a philological vision of the text dividing for the first time the work of Shevchénko in several stages, then added a lot of graphic material, taking into account that he was also a painter”.

Poetry that unites in voices claiming for a free Ukraine, a well-deserved tribute to the man who was one of the main writers and symbol of the Ukrainian nation. It has been the feeling of the Ukrainian community of Mijas who wanted to raise their voices through poetry for their Ukraine wounded in a war that has already been extinguishing smiles for a year, which the president of the association, Galyna Lisnycha, refers to, “we have already spent a year suffering, crying and praying also so that we do not get hurt, let’s say, and so that little by little all this torture ends for Ukraine and for all its people”.  The book ‘Táras Shevchénko: The Voice of Free Ukraine’ becomes a weapon of love and calls for the return of the smiles on the faces of a suffering country.
